Like the Phong shader it would take some tweaking to accomplish but using maya's nodes and rendering techniques you wouldn't have to fight your shaders nearly as much even if its more complicated than your used to working with. if you are trying to make a reusable asset you might want to read into color, saturation and contrast correction nodes to plug into your ramp- that way you could use one texture to accomplish this effect while setting up a driver attribute somewhere to control the range from dark to light. I've seen it done before though so its not impossible but I'll step back from saying its any kind of easy.Īs for the popular method in the comments, of a 3 stepped texture ramp, that's not wrong either but it should be a bit more involved than that. Light linking is a bitch sometimes, let me tell you. its more technical to reuse because your shader is produced based off your light rig *(the presense of GI) and even then you'll have to tweak various attributes if anything changes or your assets will 'pop' out of your scene due to color/shading difference.

games tend to use light fields/cubes and or some kind of fake GI- which is what TF2 uses, which is a bit more involved to setup inside maya unless you are rendering a scene. for one, the shader settings are blown WAY out to achieve this effect and on top of that it also requires a pretty robust light rig. Wind Waker, Like TF2, uses a Phong shader to achieve this effect but its a little different than how its used in Maya. It seems like most of the other commenters are missing a technical aspect of the image you are referencing.
